Sitges 2018: Interviewing Josie Ho

Josie Ho is an amazing actress, producer and rock singer (with her band Josie and the Uni Boys). She played over 60 movies, produced over 10 films and is celebrating the 10th aniversary with her rock band.

Mike y sus Chinos: First of all, welcome to the festival. It's a pleasure to be able to interview you. What do you think about the festival? Tell us about how you see the public and the organization.

Josie Ho: I’m thrilled and felt so happy that I felt like I had found some more friends, I was so glad to see more of my kind. All the fans were really into every second of the moments in the film, it’s really like a paradise and a rock n roll gig for filmmakers.

MysC: How are you feeling being juror of the festival and also to be awarded with the prestigious "time machine" (màquina del temps) award?

JH: I’m so honored that I got invited into the jury, I really felt that Sitges people know what effort I’ve put into my work, so I felt respected. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to feel this way. I’ve also learned a lot.

MysC: Your career includes several fields, such as music and cinema. Is it complicated to balance both when working?

JH: Yes, I only realized that this year I’ve never stopped working 24/7. You’ve actually reminded me now. I’ve got to utilize my time wisely. Maybe then, I can really put in more insights to my work.

MysC: Observing your filmography we see it varies the genres and it's quite international (in Sitges we enjoyed Dream Home and Open Grave). Is there much difference between working in Hong Kong or in Europe/USA?

JH: Oh! Thank you for liking these two films. I thought both were well shot. I find working on a film set in Hong Kong and Europe is not so very different, especially “Dream Home.” I made sure the production rhythm was steady and everyone knows what they are doing on set. I’m proud to say that, haha!!  And “Open Grave” of course got deeper as the story went long.

MysC: What kind of characters do you enjoy the most playing?

JH: I enjoy a lot of characters that have at least a few moments to shine. I may be greedy! (laughs).

MysC: What kind of genre is the one you enjoy the most?

JH: I think the fantastic genre is one of my favorite. I also enjoy art and cult. Actually, I’m such a movie “slut,” I like most films. As long as it really shows me something mysterious.

MysC: With your rock band Josie and the Uni Boys, you are on your 10th anniversary tour and you also release a couple of singles in 7". Can you tell us what future projects you have in mind?

JH: Maybe I should ask you to come and stay in Hong Kong from January to April 6th.  January 16th and 17th is when the project I’m most looking forward to will take place -- an experimental musical theatre piece. Josie and the Uni Boys will jam with an avant-garde vision theatre company Zuni. And my concert is on April 6th.  So come!

MysC: Back to cinema, your next project it's in the film Lucky Day, directed by Roger Avary. What can you explain about this new project?

JH: My apology, I can’t say too much about it yet. I don’t know when they will start promoting it, but I’m sure audiences will find it very fantastical. And I was so stoked to get to work with Roger Avary. He is a very inspiring person. He cracks me up sometimes.

MysC: And to end this interview we couldn't leave without asking about your future project as an actress or producer.

JH: My future project includes music which I’ve talked a bit about above. One experimental cross over with classical piano and my band Josie and the Uni Boys. It’ll be a clash or mesh of our own rock songs and classical Bolero. Then I’ve got another Josie and The Uni Boys 10th anniversary concert with s friend’s concert.  Then, a week after my concert I’ve got to work on a film, a miniseries and another Netflix original series, in which I play… hmmm, it’s about corruption in the Hong Kong 60’s. After then, my band might expand in China and hopefully get something interesting to work on. I’m looking forward to Roger Avary’s film to come out and my upcoming Japanese debut horror too. Oh, also have two more singles from my band to be released and a very meaningful and educational documentary that I produced to come. It’s called: “Finding Bliss Fire and Ice.” So, I hope that’s it for the year, I need to take some relaxation time.

Mike y sus Chinos: Ante todo, bienvenida al Festival. Es un placer poderte entrevistar. ¿Qué te parece la organización del Festival? ¿Cuéntanos sobre como ves al público y a la organización?

Josie Ho: Estoy encantada y muy feliz de haber encontrado muchos más amigos. Me ha puesto contenta ver a más de mi tipo. Todos los fans estuvieron en cada momento de la película, es como un paraíso y un bolo de rock para cineastas.

MysC: ¿Cómo te sientes al ser jurado del Festival y ser galardonada con la prestigiosa "máquina del tiempo"?
 
JH: Me siento honrada de haber sido invitada para ser jurado. Creo que la gente de Sitges sabe el esfuerzo que he puesto en mi trabajo, así que siento que me respetan. Gracias por darme la oportunidad de sentirme de esta manera. También he aprendido mucho.

MysC: Tu carrera incluye diversos campos, como el cine o la música. ¿Es complicado equilibrarlos cuando estás trabajando?

JH: Sí, y me acabo de dar cuenta que este año no he parado de trabajar 24/7. De hecho, me lo has recordado. Debo utilizar mi tiempo sabiamente. Puede que así pueda poner más conocimiento en mi trabajo.

MysC: Si observamos tu filmografía, vemos que varía de géneros y es bastante internacional (en Sitges disfrutamos de Dream Home y Open Grave). Hay mucha diferencia entre trabajar en Hong Kong y en occidente?

JH: ¡Oh! Gracias porque os gusten estas dos películas. Creo que ambas fueron muy bien rodadas. No creo que sea tan diferente trabajar en un set de Hong Kong o de Europa, especialmente Dream Home. Me aseguré que el ritmo de producción fuera constante y todo el mundo sabía lo que había que hacer en el set. ¡Estoy orgullosa de decirlo! (risas). Y Open Grave, por supuesto fue más profundo a la vez que la historia sigue.

MysC: ¿Qué tipo de personajes te gusta más interpretar?

JH: Me gustan los personajes que tengan al menos un momento en el que brillar. ¡Puede que sea codiciosa! (risas).

MysC: ¿Qué tipo de género es el que más disfrutas interpretando?

JH: Creo que el género fantástico es mi favorito. También disfruto con el artístico y culto. De hecho, soy bastante "facilona", me gustan la mayoría de films. Siempre y cuando tengan algo misterioso.

MysC: Con tu banda de rock, Josie and the Uni Boys, estáis en vuestro tour del décimo aniversario y además habéis sacado un par de singles en 7". Puedes decirnos que futuros proyectos tienes en mente?

JH: Puede que debiera pedirte que vengas a Hong Kong de enero al 6 de abril. El 16 y 17 de enero es cuando haremos el proyecto que más ganas tengo de hacer, una pieza experimental teatral. Josie and the Uni Boys haremos una jam sesion con la compañía de teatro vanguardista Zuni. Y mi concierto es el 6 de abril. ¡Así que vente!

MysC: De vuelta al cine, tu próximo proyecto es en la película Lucky Day, dirigida por Roger Avary. ¿Qué nos puedes explicar de este nuevo proyecto?

JH: Lo siento, pero todavía no puedo decir mucho. No sé cuándo empezarán a promocionar la película, pero estoy segura que los espectadores la encontrarán fantástica. Y estoy entusiasmada de haber trabajado con Roger Avary. Es una persona inspiradora. Me parto de risa con él a veces.

MysC: Y para finalizar la entrevista no podíamos irnos sin preguntarte sobre tus futuros proyectos como actriz y productora.

JH: Lo más cercano en música es lo que os he comentado antes, un experimento con piano clásico y mi banda, será una mezcla de nuestras canciones rock con Bolero. También tengo el concierto del décimo aniversario con mi banda. Y después del concierto empiezo a trabajar en una miniserie y otra serie original de Netflix, en la que interpreto... mmm... Va sobre la corrupción del Hong Kong de los 60. Después de eso puede que mi banda nos vayamos a China y con un poco de suerte algo interesante en lo que trabajar. Tengo muchas ganas de que el film de Roger Avary se estrene y tengo también una película de J-horror. Oh, también tengo dos nuevos singles que lanzar con mi banda y un documental educacional que he producido. Se llama: "Finding Bliss Fire and Ice" (Encontrando la Felicidad Fuego y Hielo). Así que espero que eso sea todo para este año que viene, necesito tomarme un poco de tiempo para relajarme. 

MysC: Gracias por tu tiempo. Ha sido un placer conocerte.

JH: Ha sido un placer hablar contigo Mike. Estoy contenta de que me hayas dejado hablar tanto. ¡Adiós!

3d naked ambition (Hong Kong, 2014)

"Mario Ozawa, te reto!"

Nuestro protagonista es Wyman Chan, un hombre que acaba de perder su trabajo. Desesperado, decide reunir a sus amigos para explicarles el magnífico plan que les hará ricos. El plan no es otro que ir a Japón a producir una película porno, y por supuesto todos acceden encantados. Todo va sobre ruedas, hasta que en el momento de rodar la primera escena, el actor no es capaz de "interpretar" su papel, y alguien tendrá que substituirlo. Chan decide ser el substituto, pero es muy tímido y la actriz lo acaba sometiendo. La película de Chan resulta ser un éxito en Japón, que lo catapultará a la fama.

Naked ambition es un despropósito en toda regla, una locura camuflada de comedia erótica, con un guión para que Chapman to se luzca al cien por cien. El director Kung-Lok Lee recupera el humor hongkonés de los 90, donde cualquier bizarrada valía, y tanto funcionaba en aquella época. Divertida, fresca y muy vulgar, son los adjetivos que hacen de Naked Ambition una de las mejores comedias del año en su país.

Lo mejor: Chapman To, la aparición estelar de Louis Koo, los gags y poder verla en 3D.

Lo peor: La historia es bastante bizarra y puede tirar para atrás a los más puristas.
